Expanding Your Reach and Reputation: Corporate Social Responsibility

Corporate Social Responsibility is increasingly used as a buzzword with small business. While you will find many definitions on the Internet, the essence is the sense that businesses, their employees, board members, and clients/customers are becoming extraordinarily engaged in the goals and services of the charities they support.

If you work for a corporation and are interested in learning more about how you can take your company's lead as a good corporate citizen, your human resources or public affairs office is a good place to start. Ask about volunteering, serving on a giving committee, writing for the employee newsletter or creating your own program for a favorite organization.

If you are a business looking for best practice models that you might consider adapting take a look at some of the corporations who do this best.

JM Family Enterprises based in Deerfield Beach, Florida, has been a good corporate citizen since 1968. Ranked as one of Fortune's top 100 employers in 2007, JM's corporate social responsibility program is exemplary of giving back in the South Florida community in the areas of education, health and poverty. JM's employees are engaged within their communities and their company.

Other companies that produce profits while preserving community that are worth checking out: Towers Perrin, Expedia, Inc., Starbucks, Walt Disney Co.

You can create a climate in your own organization that can serve as a model in your own community!
